1. Modern women and contemporary realism

The early Undset wrote about women in modern urban life: work, sexuality, art,
marriage and moral judgement. Jenny is
the strongest English entry point into this phase.

2. Medieval historical fiction

Kristin Lavransdatter and The Master
of Hestviken are the centre of Undset’s international reputation. These novels
combine historical knowledge with psychological precision and religious seriousness.

3. Catholic and ethical novels

After Undset converted to Catholicism in 1924, religious and ethical questions
